At the Ubuntu Developer Summit, Valve employee Drew Bliss said that Linux is a more viable platform for gaming than Windows 8. Gabe Newell, Valve director, has officially solidified Valve’s stance on Windows 8 by announcing that Half-Life 3 is exclusive to Linux.

Half-Life 3 is the long awaited sequel which has been in development for more than five years. It takes place right after the events of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and has been promised to conclude the Gordon Freeman storyline.

Newell has made his stance on Windows 8 clear at Casual Connect, a video game conference, and said that “Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space.” Not only has he condemned Windows 8, Valve is currently also searching for users who are willing to try out a Steam Linux beta.

At LinuxCon Europe, Newell officially announced the details during an on-stage question and answer session. The following excerpt announces the exclusive release of Half-Life 3 on Linux:

Audience member: Okay, um. What about Half-Life 3?

[audience laughter]

Newell: Funny you should mention that. I would like to state right now that the next Half-Life game will officially be exclusive on Linux platforms.

[audience cheers]

Newell: Many might say, Gabe, there isn’t a strong enough gamer base on Linux, you will lose money! I do not care about the money. I care about the players. They deserve an unparalleled experience and I intend to give it to them. This release will spark a Linux gaming revolution and will provide a dynamic shift in the developer space that is desperately needed to save everyone from the nightmare that is Windows 8.

Audience member: What if there isn’t a revolution?

Newell: There will be. There has to be. If I didn’t have faith that Linux would take off as a gaming platform, I would not be up here. In fact, we had to restart development when I made the decision to move to Linux. Half-Life 3 for Windows would be finished right now if I did not make that choice.

Audience member: What about iOS?

Newell: Exclusive means exclusive.

Audience member: So, how about a release date?

Newell: Don’t push it.

In a recent survey taken by Wikipedia on operating system statistics, approximately 1.58% of all users use Linux, just losing out to next popular operating system, Other, at 5.41%.

      HEY EVERYONE
the info’s false, its kind of obvious but i want it out there.

honestly gabe saying this would be like he was deprived or something, all i can think about is linux for some reason, granted they are still doing a great job supporting the enviroment as they can.

      • Byu says:

Wow, if it did happen all the windows users would really be super pissed off at Gabe and Valve, I am a Windows user and I would personally get me and my friends to hunt gabe down and make him pay big time.

  2. Rez says:

It would be nice, but unless they (or linux community) come up with some feasible way of running current Windows games in Linux I’m guessing the revolution will be short lived. There’s always Wine, but apparently it’s not working that well for some.

    • mirko says:

It’s not up to community to make current win games running better on linux. It’s up to those who make the games to port it to linux, and until now nobody thought that it’s worth it. Linux as a platform has no problems with games. The problem lays in software and graphic card manufacturers for lack of support, which is sad because all of them use some variant of linux in one way or the other.

      • uh20 says:

nvidia released their new driver that gets faster performance than even the windows drivers, ZING!

so, i guess we all only need to care about games and amd now, intel is working on it i know

    • zeR says:

Well, to explain you as a developer how the things work: the ONLY *good* and feasible way of running current Windows games on Linux is if their developers itself *port* them to Linux. The second best way is wine.

Thanks to DirectX but things are going to change.

    • crabbypup says:

actually, games run a lot faster on linux than they do on windows. it’s the difference between OpenGL and DirectX. OpenGL is far superior in performance – the issue has always been the drivers, because the devs just aren’t putting as much effort into linux drivers as they are for windows. further proof of this fact can be seen on valve’s linux development blog, where they actually state, plain as day, that linux and OpenGL performs much better than windows and DirectX.

I was a little serious at first, but after reading some of the other posts on this website, I realize its more about subtle and light-hearted spoofs…
Thing is, the latest Half Life 3/LinuxCon article brought me here. And it got half of my friends and family excited. I mean I get the idea of having some fun, but, you have to agree that HL3 is a touchy subject…
If gamers weren’t so highly intelligent and honor-bound; we would have taken to the streets, rioting. So I think you could’ve been slightly more obvious that it was a spoof, of course I understand that that would’ve been against the essence of this website, as I really appreciate and enjoy the subtle spoof genre…
I also admit that being a fan of the genre I shouldn’t have fallen for the article in the first place, but like I said, HL3, touchy subject…
    Thanks.
    ’twas fun.

  19. Okay, so, where did u put your sources?
Why at the event schedule there are not mantion about Gabe Newell?
Have u got something that make your post more reliable?

    • The schedule would not have mentioned him by name because “Valve” was to be at UDS, but they didn’t seem to know who would represent the company. If you watch Mark’s keynote, you will see that he at one point gives a shout out to the folks at Valve, and gets to response, because they had not even arrived yet.

  20. Fail says:

Seriously… They supported OSX for years before linux and people are believing that they would just skip it? I lol’d

  21. Fail says:

Also HL3? That’s been announced right?

    NOPE.

  22. 313 says:

OpenGL was always a step ahead, as is with Firefox, file systems … e.t.c. (a lot of softwares , technologies). I was a Windows user for many years, and when I say many, my first Windows-thing was 3.1 . And for me it worked out with computers only because of the games. Since then they have always produced bulshits like: win 95/98, win Millenium , win Vista , and now win 8 . Now I am even tired of waiting for the ‘new, and not bugy’ IE*, whereever is always a mistery exactly what part of the web standards is covered… and moved totally to ubuntu and OTHER browsers. So I guess everything ‘s back to normal with the Linux orientation.

Right now I use Windows 7 and as much as I would want to play Half Life 3 I would not upset my business to switch operating systems. Gabe is like the dictators in the Middle East that throw his supporters under the bus. He must be crazy with an ego that might cause his oversized head to explode. His ego is not his amigo.

  32. This website is obviously desperate for views to make up a story like this!

  33. h8rs says:

lol. I find it amusing when people refuse to “switch to linux” and so will not continue the game. You can install linux for free, with ease, right along-side Windows. Don’t have to lose any of your data, and can keep windows on your computer without any issues.

Also, looking into the different OS, linux is a better choice for running games, for the simple fact that the OS itself is written better and is more stable. Linux alone runs faster. The reason linux hasn’t gotten bigger is because software development companies have not been developing for linux because it is not a business standard. With Valve moving the Steam platform over to linux, that is the first step in moving a major part of the gaming industry. Admittedly, Windows7 has been a very good OS, both for stability and being user friendly. However, Windows 8 is taking some of the basic parts of how people use PCs and changing it to conform to tablets/touchscreens. That move is going to cost Microsoft a decent chunk of customers. Linux is better than Windows 8 for gaming, not because the drivers or games that have been ported over, but simply because the OS itself has better functionality and is more user-friendly.

  34. youra wayke says:

You people Complaining that windows is the only option for you now are joking right 30 minutes of reading few minutes of install and a newbie user can have Debian installed there is Ubuntu but that’s setting up for a fall, Goto start or the
    windows ORB
    open “control panel”
    open “Administrative tools”
open “Computer Management” Storage Disk Management

Select C: or an empty large space

If you only have 1 drive do this

Right click C: shrink volume work out how much you want to keep for windows
After going the the motions of setting file size

Get you Linux install disk or USB you can put on USB using a Live USB creator install Linux to the Freespace you created simple

NO need to delete switch or kill windows if you use Debian Choose Grub as your boot loader you will know when it finishes the install gives you choice of LiLo or Grub
Grub won’t mess up windows boot I’ve had issues with LiLo in the past…

When booting computer now you will have
    LINUX etc etc
    Windows (*) etc etc

you can set a default boot of either when turning on PC etc

  35. No one important says:

I can’t imagine Gabe saying “Don’t push it.” he would probably say “Aha, ah. nope, *chuckles* There’s no release date yet.”

  36. bomzi says:

Using is one thing, but liking it is just sick.

  37. bomzi says:

this was supposed to be a reply to a post where some guy implied he would kill Gabe, implying that he actually likes windows.

  38. Anonymous says:

“Rez” There is a way to run any Windows program in Linux. It’s called “Wine” and it installs by default with Linux. I’m currently running a 3 different systems, and all 3 dual boot into Linux. Really, the only reason I ever load into Windows is to play Windows exclusive games, or to use Adobe. Linux is far more stable than Windows could ever hope to be, and benchmarks prove that it’s a faster platform, plus, it’s free. The time has come for Microsofts strangle hold to end, and I think Gabe has the right idea.

Steam has grown into a gaming platform of its own, and if it moves to newer releases being Linux exclusive, true gamers will follow. I already have Steam beta installed on linux, and I am slowly installing the Linux versions as they are released.

If anyone has a problem moving to Linux, don’t be afraid. Its a superb mix of Windows, and Mac OS, along with its own unique perfection. Its open source which means that the only things added to it are community supprted, and hardware compatibility is beyond anything that Windows, or Apple could attempt. 15 year old game pads will work on Linux. This is a move in the right direction if you ask me. Linux is the future of PCs, while Microsoft focuses on the trendy tablet, and touch market. Let the real computer users finally go to Linux where they belong.

goto Ubuntu and download wubi, the Windows Ubuntu installer that will let you have both OS’s installed on your system. Try it out, and see the light.

  39. Mr. SMJ says:

I’d like to see other opensource alternatives to opensource, like the chrome os etc…
