It is with a heavy heart that we have to report that the satirical Penny Arcade Report, helmed by funnyman Ben Kuchera, will be shutting down by the end of the year.Calling himself senior editor of the Penny Arcade Report, Ben Kuchera knew how to tackle video game journalism in a funny and thought-provoking manner. Up until the end, he continued to write and edit article after article of hilarious jokes, fake reviews and even created controversy by pretending to be a horrible journalist and calling out others through his misguided views.
He was very eloquent in how he used his words. Describing the PlayStation 4 controller similarly to the time he “touched a girl’s breast in the backseat of a car with fogged up windows,” his mockery of the profession went to extreme lengths. He even bent over backwards to defend the original Xbox One policy of banning used games with hypotheticals like “Steam-style sales on older or bundled games on the Xbox One.”
While not everything was written by Kuchera himself, he knew where to find quality satire. The King of Fighters XIII review was brilliant in the way that it pointed out the sexism and racism that no one else noticed while barely mentioning that the game is a fighting game.
Kuchera would also delve into subjects outside of video game journalism which brilliantly mocked regular video game journalism for covering things that are not even tangentially related to the subject at hand. For instance, talking about the Indian Miss America controversy when no one asked him to especially when readers are going to a website about video games.
He will mostly be remembered for the Erik Kain controversy in which Kuchera called out the Forbes writer for what appeared to be advocating for piracy even though Kain had written articles against piracy before. Even after a correction from the writer, Kuchera continued his crusade against him which mocked the self-righteousness and ego that some game journalists have.
We believe that Kuchera’s Twitter feed best distills the essence of the brilliance behind the satirical Penny Arcade Report. Please sit back and enjoy the memories. It is rumored that Penny Arcade founder Jerry Holkins shut down the Penny Arcade Report because it was funnier than the Penny Arcade comic.
