The Penny Arcade Report, Famed Satirical Video Game Journalism Website, Shuts Down

It is with a heavy heart that we have to report that the satirical Penny Arcade Report, helmed by funnyman Ben Kuchera, will be shutting down by the end of the year.longlivethekingCalling himself senior editor of the Penny Arcade Report, Ben Kuchera knew how to tackle video game journalism in a funny and thought-provoking manner. Up until the end, he continued to write and edit article after article of hilarious jokes, fake reviews and even created controversy by pretending to be a horrible journalist and calling out others through his misguided views.

He was very eloquent in how he used his words. Describing the PlayStation 4 controller similarly to the time he “touched a girl’s breast in the backseat of a car with fogged up windows,” his mockery of the profession went to extreme lengths. He even bent over backwards to defend the original Xbox One policy of banning used games with hypotheticals like “Steam-style sales on older or bundled games on the Xbox One.”

While not everything was written by Kuchera himself, he knew where to find quality satire. The King of Fighters XIII review was brilliant in the way that it pointed out the sexism and racism that no one else noticed while barely mentioning that the game is a fighting game.

Kuchera would also delve into subjects outside of video game journalism which brilliantly mocked regular video game journalism for covering things that are not even tangentially related to the subject at hand. For instance, talking about the Indian Miss America controversy when no one asked him to especially when readers are going to a website about video games.

He will mostly be remembered for the Erik Kain controversy in which Kuchera called out the Forbes writer for what appeared to be advocating for piracy even though Kain had written articles against piracy before. Even after a correction from the writer, Kuchera continued his crusade against him which mocked the self-righteousness and ego that some game journalists have.

We believe that Kuchera’s Twitter feed best distills the essence of the brilliance behind the satirical Penny Arcade Report. Please sit back and enjoy the memories. dontyou forgetaboutme willyourecognizemecallmynameorwalkonbyIt is rumored that Penny Arcade founder Jerry Holkins shut down the Penny Arcade Report because it was funnier than the Penny Arcade comic.

  2. Gen Barrison says:

Never forget. He was a true video game journalist who knew that being a shill came first and stupid, worthless shit like integrity, quality and and professionalism were meaningless.
He was a true example for us all.

  3. Jesse says:

Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll be picked up soon by another quality games journalism website such as Polygon or Kotaku.

  4. Anthony says:

There will never be a better satirical site like Penny Arcade Report. Rip in Peace PAR…Rip in Peace.

  5. "Big Ben" Kuchera says:

I’ve sent you guys my CV, why aren’t you getting back to me?
I also need a place to stay. I don’t think I’m allowed back into the Penny Arcade Mansion.

Wow, this @cambiata person actually thought ben kuchera played videogames?
Does he have any idea what game journalists actually do? I’m ashamed just reading this.

    • Cambiata says:

I wasn’t even referring to him personally. I was speaking generally about video games journalism and my problems with it, in defense of a Forbes article that Kuchera had dismissed. It was Kuchera who took it as a personal attack on his integrity.

I wondered why there was a drop in blogging post-Thanksgiving. I thought maybe Ben was working on an expose of how the video game industry mistreats turkeys. (A rather personal topic for Ben seeing that he is a turkey.)

My favorite memory is that, early on, the Penny Arcade Report eschewed the gossip-mongering of other game “news” sites like Kotaku in favor of more fact-based and fair-minded analysis/linking. It turns out this wasn’t profitable and the PA Report copied Kotaku’s model for more hits. You can see the tone-shift if you go back and read all the headlines. (See for the earliest headlines.) It’s funny how the titles/headings of linked articles (“The Cut”) go from ” explains ” to attention-grabbing declarations (such as “Ben Affleck is the new Batman? Okay, let’s deal with this like adults”).

However, there is a silver lining. Kotaku’s model wasn’t profitable either. This means Kotaku will shut down eventually.

Maybe now Ben will entertain counter-opinions regarding women and gam… THREAD LOCKED.

Whoops, some of my text was interpreted as HTML code.

The line above (before “Ben Affleck”) should be “*some person* explains *some topic*.”

It’s too bad PATV is also going. I’ll miss Extra Credits since I don’t wanna go to its youtube channel to watch it.

    • Anonymous says:

extra “videogames are a medium not a way for people to have fun so we’d better pretend we’re better than casual racism lest people perceive us as hooligans and lesser people” credits?
extra “literally the peanut gallery” credits?
extra “we only do as little research as possible so as to maintain the pace of content output and bare minimum amount of integrity” credits?
extra “we have so little personality that we literally need to put our voice through a filter” credits?
I can keep going by the way.

  9. Western says:

This is great news, but I’m not a mean spirited person, I really hope Ben finds a new job outside the games industry soon.

  10. He’s gross, but you’re mad that in a rare moment of non-grossness he pointed out that King Of Fighters XIII is wretched. I strongly suspect you’re a gross little shit monster too and look forward to your own website closing too, chuckles

  11. Wiwiweb says:

Truly was the greatest satirical website. Ben fooled so many people into thinking his articles were genuine, even when it was so obvious. We have lost something great today.

P4R, have you thought about making satirical articles as an homage to Penny Arcade Report, and maybe take up the torch?

  12. Johnny Nutsack says:

    wow, harsh

  13. Anita Sarkeesian says:

I bet the Patriarchy did this

  16. EdgeWeiss says:

I’m especially sad that their other humor segment, Extra Credits, is going away. It was an excellent parody of poorly thought-out and pretentious treatises that try to address concepts within the medium in a half-assed way. They expertly mocked the way that people attempt to add deeper philosophical meanings to games that have none, like Missile Command.

  17. Clerisy says:

It’s not satire when it’s true, guys.

  18. Anonymous says:

Whoa, c’mon guys. Let’s all try to show a little class and not just heap tons of mean-spirited abuse on somebody who just lost their job, regardless of what you thought of them as a person or a professional.

See, now that… What I just did there? THAT was satire.
I just pretended like I didn’t know I was on the Internet.

  19. Adam J. says:

    Yeah, rip

  20. Arnold Midler says:

So long and thanks for all the shit.

  21. Bill says:

Nothing of value has been lost.

  22. Wait a second… Is P4R not l337 for PAR?!

    I’M ON TO YOU!!!

  23. hento says:

  24. benHWO says:

  25. Dead.juice says:

I can’t tell if this article is being sarcastic or not.
