The Big Bang Theory has Done More for Video Games than Shigeru Miyamoto
If Shigeru Miyamoto is considered the “father of video gaming,” then The Big Bang Theory is the mother who stayed while the father ran off with another woman. I know that this is a controversial opinion, but it’s true. The only reason video games are alive today is because they are kept in the public eye by shows like The Big Bang Theory. Who would know what a Mario is without Sheldon referencing Super Mario 64? The PlayStation 3 would have died without The Big Bang Theory namedropping the console. Face it, gamers need The Big Bang Theory more than they need Shigeru Miyamoto.
Don’t get me wrong, Miyamoto made some great games and stuff, but The Big Bang Theory made them popular. Without the show, he would be unemployed. Gamers should be more appreciative of the guys who make the program (and watch the program) because they are the sole reason people are still playing new games today. Every time you hear a person shout “Bazinga!” you know there’s another gamer being created and you should be smiling.
People keep getting this idea that video games are just for nerds. That is completely untrue and The Big Bang Theory is helping disprove that stereotype. The characters on the show are normal people that others can relate to. They just find themselves in comedic situations that people laugh at. When people look at this show, they want to play video games because they want to become just like Sheldon.
Most importantly, video games in this show are portrayed accurately unlike some other popular programs like Breaking Bad (by the way, a way less wholesome show than The Big Bang Theory). The writers know exactly what they’re doing because I’m pretty sure they are gamers themselves. I’ve never played World of Warcraft, but this video is proof that either the writers have played the game or the actors are gamers themselves.
Any real gamer not watching this show is doing the industry a disservice. We need more shows like The Big Bang Theory to take gaming into the next decade. Can you imagine a game created by a fan of The Big Bang Theory? That could happen in the next few years and that guy will be the new Shigeru Miyamoto.
