On January 7th 2013, an unknown woman posted a challenge on Twitter by wanting to see a pin-up calender full of men posing in lewd positions with their video game consoles. Amid the growing criticism that video game culture is misogynistic, a community of devoted gamers have responded to the call.

With the increasing emphasis placed on sexism present in video game culture, many male gamers have been finding themselves targeted by uninformed media critics. Twitter has been flooded with stories of women being objectified, sexually harassed during online play, and hated by video game culture.

This calender is one community’s way of saying “Look ladies, if you want us to treat your bodies as seriously as we treat ours, this is what it looks like.”

The feminist response came the following day with Anita Sarkeesian spearheading a petition to get the calender removed from the internet.

The calender can be downloaded here.

So where’s Anita’s campaign to get it taken down from the internet? I didn’t see anything from the link you provided?

  2. Nobody says:

Seems like they just deleted it. ;-) Probably ashamed that they stepped up in that.

  3. Hey, girls are allowed to post images of themselves posing with controllers of consoles they’ve never even played a game on. So why is it when guys do the same thing suddenly “feminists” start petitioning to get it ripped down, eh?

I bet Anita has no problem with the whores who post lewd images of themselves, since after all the only thing she’s after is destroying the gaming industry and rebuilding it in her own “all women must be independent strong figures and all men must be scumbags and if you disagree you’re misogynistic and are promoting rape”. The second men attempt to stand up for themselves however, fingers start being pointed at them. Who’s the real sexists here?

I will have you know it’s Mr. Cheetember.

This is brilliant. I saved it for future destribution. The link still works if you save it. I guess when someone impedes on the fantasy life these “Neo-Feminists” create, they get bent out of shape from the opposition.

Really, why have a belief structure that is so unrealistic? Why work so hard to uphold values when if it were natural and right, it’d need not upholding?

Finally, if you need permission from someone else to “stop” or “do” anything…doesn’t that mean you’re not really equal?

My question is: Where is the calendar of barely-clothed hot women?

I’m pretty sure that this Anita Sarkeesian person does not, infact, represent the views of feminists as a whole or even as a majority.

I am a feminist by virtue of desiring equality for women. That is about all there is to it. I do not think taking down a calendar of male gamers would solve anything, nor do I particularly find it a problem for it to exist to begin with. I don’t honestly care.

But I do take issue with the following thing you said:

I bet Anita has no problem with the whores who post lewd images of themselves, since after all the only thing she’s after is destroying the gaming industry and rebuilding it in her own “all women must be independent strong figures and all men must be scumbags and if you disagree you’re misogynistic and are promoting rape”. The second men attempt to stand up for themselves however, fingers start being pointed at them.

Calling women who post “lewd” images of themselves “whores” really invalidates whatever point you were trying to make by making it appear that you are yourself one of those individuals who objectifies and sexualized women, talks down to us, makes disparaging remarks and crude language, and so on. Further, the problem is not that men are trying to stick up for themselves. It is that one person — this “Anita” person, whom I have no familiarity with and have never even heard of before now — may or may not be reacting in an unreasonable and overly-antagonistic fashion (or there may be more to this story than meets the eye, and the reactions here might be the incorrect ones. I will have to take the time to look into this before I can say any view on that).

But men taking exception to it being implied or stated that they are not correct, that they are not treating women as equals, and this causing them to feel it is somehow impinging on their egos or self-image are a problem that has existed for a very, very, very long time. It is not “standing up for yourself” if you are casting blame for your own actions and behavior on others. If an individual or group is truly being maligned against (as may or may not be the case here), that’s one thing.

But when you react to one fanatic by calling women “whores”, that is very representative of the mindset and disparaging language that actual feminists are attempting to change. Men who want to see women debase themselves and act in a sexual manner for their enjoyment, but then turn right around and make disparaging remarks or use crude language like “whore”, “slut”, etc. are 100% a part of the problem. If you would like to refute the unreasonableness of one or a few individuals, I would request that you consider not being unreasonable yourself and using insulting language in the process.
